On the 9th of December, Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme funded GREENER project hosted the 1st Good Energy Practice Seminar of the partnership, moderated by GREENER project lead partner Anne Marie McLaughlin from ERNACT. During the event speakers from 3 different NPA projects shared real world experiences in energy efficient and renewable solutions implemented across the NPA regions.
Attendees from Finland, Scotland and Ireland have had the opportunity to learn about community wind generation, geothermal, intelligent energy usage, reducing biomass waste, storing summer heat for winter use, and harnessing the heat of the ocean for district heating systems.
Due to connection problems Markku Kananen from University of Oulu (Finland) could not finish his presentation about The UK’s Biggest Community Wind Farm, Residents' experiences of geothermal energy and solar collectors and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) – the solution to reducing biomass waste in Iceland and negligible emissions of the carcinogenic chemicals, dioxin and furan.
Fabian Sander from Centria University of Applied Sciences (Finland) shared the experience with the Finn Spring: Seasonal thermal energy storage. Through the pilot project called “EVAKOT” they found a solution to use excess waste heat by directing the energy into a thermal storage. During the summer months, when the excess waste heat was available, the energy was stored into the ground. Thus the soil in the ground was heated up by the waste heat from the compressors.
Heather Young from Derry City and Strabane District (North Ireland) explained the Irish Street Community Centre energy generation and storage. Solar PV and the intelligent storage system, adjusting energy usage according to needs in community centre offices.
Ragnar Asmundsson from Orkusetur Energy Agency (Iceland) talked about the Ocean Heat. How oceans are teeming with heat as an immense source of renewable energy. This seawater source heat pump system is extracting heat from seawater for energy utilization and space heating.
